Grant Gunderson Photography

I searched for some interesting skiing photographs and found Grand Gunderson's website. He has some photos where he plays with light that I really like and he has some amazing action shots. Check out his website.

Bighorns

These are photos from a Backpacking trip in the Bighorns. While they are not classified as winter photography, 80% of the time it was either raining or snowing on us! We took advantage of the few moments of sunshine to take some goofy photos. This was also the first time I discovered how to use the black and white mode on my camera, so I was shooting most of the weekend in black and white.

Cooked shoe anyone? In an attempt to dry out a pair of shoes Dad was heating them over the stove. This doesn't smell the best...

Trying to warm up. I would like this photo better if it didn't have my brother's hat and the random clutter that draws your eye to it.

Mary meditating on the odd rock that was balancing on 3 small rocks. This was all over in the Bighorns and we couldn't figure out what was going on - there were large rocks balancing on 3 smaller rocks all over!

I really like this photo of the random assortment of stuff in the bottom corner of our tent. I like the lines the tent makes and draws your eye into the photo. But of course, no name brands were showing here.

Clothing

I photoshoped this so the underarmour would stand out. The colors of the clothing didn't really let it stand out.

Here the Columbia brand is on the back of her shirt.

This one is featuring the Carhartt hat.

Carhartt coat and you can't really see it but it is also a Carhartt hat.

All of these were shot in sports mode.

Bridger

These photos were taken at Bridger Bowl over the weekend. I didn't mean to take the first one but it came out kind of cool with the tilt of the camera.

The next photo is of Hannah getting stuck on the powder while trying to take a short cut onto another trail. While I don't like where her hands are, I do like that you can clearly see that she is laughing.

I also tried to play with the sun a little bit to take some sillouette photos, but the sun wasn't really low enough to make them turn out like I wanted. I did get this photo however and liked it. All of these were shot on the snow mode.

Great Photos

Here are three photographs I found to illustrate some of the different characteristics that make great photographs. The first one I think really tells a story and may trigger memories for people that have gone through hard times such as the Great Depression. By looking at the photograph you can feel the worry and hardship that she is experiencing. This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange and can be found here.

The next photo I think evokes a feeling, in that it brings a smile to the person's face who is looking at it. Einstein is just plain being goofy. This photo was taken by Arthur Sasse and can be found here.

The final photo uses reflections to make it great. In this photograph there isn't really bold horizon line, so the ski and the water all blend together giving it a kind of mystery. This photo was taken by Ede Stein and can be found here.

exposure pics

The first two photos I was playing with shutter speed. I don't really know how to control it on my camera, but I uesd the sports mode for one and portrait for the other. If they both had a flash on they turned out pretty similar. The photos of the rubber duckies was where I was playing with ISO. I set it at 100 and then 1600 and it was clear to see the difference. I tried to find aparature, but have no idea how to change it on my camera.

Photoshop Trail Running

The above 3 photos are how the original photos looked. I played with them in photoshop and made some changes which you can see below. The one of Mary running I adjusted the brightness and contrast so is wasn't so pale. I took the log out of the one of her runnng away. And the last one I just had fun and made the background black and white.

Niko

Some of you may know him, some of you may not, but Niko Schatz, a former Rocky student has his own photography webpage. He is up in Alaska working and has some cool pictures taken around sled dogs. He also has some pictures on the site that he took when we were hiking the Lake Fork trail up to a frozen waterfall a few years back.

Trail Running (Snowshoeing)

These are some pictures taken on the Lake Fork trail south of Red Lodge. I had my camera on the snow setting, which worked for some of the pictures, but some of them the exposure wasn't right. The bright colors (orange and red) really draw the person out against the white and greens of the background. I tried to play with slightly different angles.
